Joe Donley is a senior at Olathe East High School. He is a member of the Chamber Orchestra, Night Hawks Big Band, and Madrigals Choir. He is also a member of the Kansas City Youth Symphony in the Symphony Orchestra. Joe studies bass with Jeff Kail, principal bassist for the Kansas City Symphony. He was awarded the Musical Leadership award in his orchestra three years in a row, and is also a two time winner of the Director’s Award. Joe has played bass in several different pit orchestras, and hopes to keep playing for shows in his future. When he isn’t stuck in a practice room, Joe likes to spend time outdoors in the park playing disk golf with his friends. In addition to bass, Joe also plays the guitar and enjoys being a very diverse musician. He plays many different styles of music, including classical, jazz, rock, blues, and funk. After high school, Joe plans on attending college and pursuing a career in music education. He hopes to teach orchestra so that he can inspire young string players to become great musicians just as his teachers inspired him. Making the finals for the Young Artist Competition is Joe’s proudest achievement so far, but he has also received 1 Ratings at regional and state solo and ensemble festivals in the past. Joe is very fond of coffee, and in his opinion, the best cup of coffee in Kansas City comes from Broadway Café in Westport.
